What Are the Dead
Doing at the Moment?
The Bible gives us essential insights into what happens after death—yet leaves some mysteries for us to ponder. Here is a blend of Scripture and speculative thought, seeking to reconcile spiritual truth with emerging scientific insight.
1. Conscious Existence Beyond Death (Luke 16:22–23; 2 Cor. 5:8)
According to Scripture, when a person dies, their soul does not sleep or vanish—it remains conscious. Jesus described a rich man in torment and Lazarus in comfort, both fully aware and able to remember their earthly lives. Paul also declared that to be “absent from the body” is to be “present with the Lord” for believers (2 Corinthians 5:8).
Jesus’ parable of the rich man and Lazarus (Luke 16:19–31) suggests that after death, people are conscious and aware—either in comfort (like Lazarus) or in torment (like the rich man). This points to a continued existence after death, not soul-sleep or unconsciousness.
“...the rich man also died and was buried. In Hades, where he was in torment, he looked up and saw Abraham far away, with Lazarus by his side.” (Luke 16:22–23)
Paul wrote, “to be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord” (2 Corinthians 5:8), and he longed to “depart and be with Christ, which is better by far” (Philippians 1:23). This suggests that saved souls are in the presence of Jesus, experiencing peace and rest.
2. Scientific Speculation: Energy, Essence, and Eternal Life
In scientific terms, we know energy cannot be destroyed—only transformed (First Law of Thermodynamics). If human beings are more than just matter—if we are, as Genesis says, animated by the breath of God—then death is not annihilation, but transition. The essence of a person—spirit, consciousness, identity—continues, now unbound by physical constraints.
Believers, purified through Christ, are reunited with their Creator, while unbelievers—still carrying the imprint of unredeemed sin—cannot enter God’s presence, not out of rejection, but because holiness and darkness are utterly incompatible (1 John 1:5). Thus, hell may be the magnified perception of one’s own fallen condition, separated from light and life.
All the dead—righteous and unrighteous—will be resurrected at the end of time:
“...a time is coming when all who are in their graves will hear his voice and come out—those who have done what is good will rise to live, and those who have done what is evil will rise to be condemned.” (John 5:28–29)
Those who die outside of Christ are in a state of separation from God, often described as Hades or Sheol. Revelation 20:13–15 says they will be judged at the Great White Throne before being cast into the lake of fire.
3. Different Realms, Different Dimensions
Scripture strongly indicates that the realm of the dead is entirely separate from the realm of the living. In Luke 16:26, Abraham tells the rich man, “between us and you a great chasm has been set in place, so that those who want to go from here to you cannot, nor can anyone cross over from there to us.” This isn't just metaphorical—it implies a fixed boundary between dimensions, inaccessible by natural or occult means.
Modern quantum theory hints that multiple dimensions or realms may coexist unseen by the human eye. If that’s the case, the spiritual realm may operate on frequencies or dimensions inaccessible to us, unless God Himself allows contact (as with visions, dreams, or angelic visitations). But these are initiated by God—not summoned by human will.
4. The Danger of Mediums, Ouija Boards, and Necromancy
Because the dead cannot cross realms or communicate with the living, any spiritual interaction that appears to do so is counterfeit. The Bible clearly warns against all forms of necromancy, divination, or attempting to contact the dead:
“Let no one be found among you who... consults the dead. Anyone who does these things is detestable to the Lord.” (Deuteronomy 18:10–12)
These practices often open spiritual doorways not to deceased loved ones, but to deceptive spirits, demons who prey on grief, curiosity, or rebellion. They mimic voices, appearances, and emotions to lure people into spiritual bondage.
If you own Ouija boards, occult books, tarot cards, or have been involved with spiritual mediums—even “for fun”—cut all ties completely. These objects and practices are demonic in nature. Remove them from your home and renounce them in Jesus’ name. They are not harmless—they are hooks the enemy uses to gain access.
5. Timelessness and the Eternal Present
In both Scripture and quantum theory, time is not strictly linear. God exists outside of time (Isaiah 46:10), and quantum mechanics suggests that time may behave differently across dimensions. This supports the idea that the judgment of souls, though future to us, is already unfolding in God’s eternal now—a realm where all is present before Him.
So what are the dead doing at this moment?
Believers are with Christ, at peace, their essence returning to its Source.
Unbelievers are in a conscious, separated state, awaiting judgment—not because God desires punishment, but because His holiness cannot be compromised.
Both are in a state that may not follow our earthly perception of time, possibly reflecting the spiritual and quantum truth that all things are connected beyond the veil of this world.
This speculative integration of Scripture and science is not doctrine but a humble attempt to bridge the seen and unseen for those seeking deeper understanding.
Conclusion
At this very moment, the dead are in conscious spiritual states—either with Christ or separated from Him—awaiting final resurrection and judgment. Their ability to interact with us is nonexistent; any appearance otherwise is a deception orchestrated by the enemy. Understanding this can both guard our souls and increase our awe at the holy justice and mercy of God.
Death is not the end—it is a veil. And only through the Light of Christ can we pass through it into life eternal.
Here is a simple but powerful Prayer of Renunciation and Deliverance, grounded in biblical authority and the name of Jesus Christ:
Prayer of Renunciation and Freedom in Christ
Heavenly Father,
I come before You in the name of Jesus Christ—Your Son, my Savior and Lord.
I acknowledge that I have engaged in practices that Your Word calls sin. I now fully renounce any and all involvement with occult activities, including:
• Tarot cards or oracle cards,
• Fortune-telling,
• Seeking guidance about my future from anything other than You,
• Consulting mediums or attempting to contact the dead,
• Placing faith in symbols, crystals, rituals, or spiritual forces that are not of You.
I confess that by doing these things, I unknowingly aligned myself with deception.
I acknowledge that only You, God, hold the future, and the devil is a liar who cannot see what is to come—he only imitates truth to confuse and destroy.
I repent for ever putting my trust in created things instead of the Creator.
I recognize now that trying to control or foresee life outside of Your will is rebellion, and I want no part in it any longer.
In the name of Jesus Christ, I now:
Renounce all these practices and break every spiritual agreement I have made—consciously or unconsciously—with darkness.
Sever every tie to unclean spirits associated with fortune-telling, confusion, false faith, and counterfeit spiritual power.
Command every demonic spirit that may have entered through these practices to leave me now, and go where Jesus sends you.
You have no authority here. I belong to Jesus Christ, who defeated you at the cross.
Lord Jesus, I ask You now to cleanse me by Your blood.
Close every door I opened to the enemy, and seal it shut with the power of Your name.
Fill every place in me with Your Holy Spirit and Your truth.
Restore to me the joy of salvation and the clarity that comes only from walking in the light.
Thank You for Your mercy, Your forgiveness, and Your victory.
I receive Your freedom now. I am redeemed. I am clean. I am Yours.
In Jesus’ name,
Amen.
